10 Tips to being strong, confident and beautiful

BelleMag met with Gwen Flamberg, beauty director at Us Weekly, who has rubbed shoulders with the greatest stars. You don’t need to be a top model to be fabulous and to give off a positive vibe - a certain je ne sais quoi that makes us beautiful. The first goal is to accept ourselves, stay authentic and make the best of what we have, using just a few simple tips.

1. Swipe on a Bright Lipstick

There is nothing as mood changing as a bright pop of colour, and I love the simplicity of applying lipstick, straight from the tube with little else on your face – major impact, even with minimal makeup.

2. Get Some Sleep

Never underestimate the power of zzz’s when it comes to beauty – and overall health! Find the number of hours that YOU need (everyone has their own sweet spot according to personal circadian rhythms) and indulge. You’ll find smoother, clearer, creamier skin when you wake up, as well as brighter eyes and a brighter mood!

3. But Never Go to Bed with Makeup On

However, before you snooze, make sure to remove every trace of makeup from your face and cleanse away the dirt and other residue that can build up throughout the day. Anything left on your face before bed undermines the beauty rejuvenating powers of sleep.

4. Whiten Your Teeth

I’m a big fan of artisanal coffee and I also enjoy red wine, so I get an in-office Zoom whitening treatment every couple years, then maintain my brighter smile at home with a whitening toothpaste like Arm & Hammer™ Truly Radiant™. I’m also a big fan of smiling – nothing says “I own this room” better than flashing a mega watt grin when you arrive.

5. Work Your Natural Hair Texture

The way to walk out the door with every day a great hair day is to simply embrace the hair you were born with. Why let humidity and rain dictate how you feel about yourself? Find a stylist who specializes in your texture, be it curly, frizzy or stick straight, and have them give you a cut that will work for you 24/7 in any environment.

6. Rely on a Cellulose Mask

7. Find the Workout You Love

Confidence lies in feeling in control of how you look and feel. An exercise regimen does just that but one workout does not suit all. I hate cardio – absolutely loathe it. So I found a ballet-based routine that lengthens, strengthens, and above all makes me feel calm and radiant. Find what you love so that you will make the workout a consistent part of your life!

8. Pay Attention to Your Body

And since you are spending time and energy on your body, don’t neglect the skin below your neck. Moisturize daily and pay extra attention to those less-than-perfect parts – before you know it, a steady skincare routine will help the skin on your body look more toned and sleek.

9. Recapture a Getaway Glow

Think about when you’ve felt calm, sexy and beautiful – on vacation, right? Recreate the way you look on holiday and you can reclaim a bit of the vibe. Most people love looking like they’ve got some sun on vacation, so indulge in the self-tanner. I prefer keeping my makeup to a minimum and just playing up cheeks and lips with a rosy cream blush.

10. Wear Sunscreen

Enough can’t be said about the importance of sunscreen! Take charge of your skin health by applying an SPF 30 every day, even during the winter. There are beautiful fluid formulas now that feel like you’ve got nothing on. You’ll thank yourself years later when you get compliments on your complexion!
