The long awaited theatrical adaptation of The Great Gatsby novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald premiered Friday, May 10, 2013. The story takes place during the roaring 1920’s. Not only were the parties grand, but also so were the decadent outfits, lavish accessories, and sultry make-up. The 1920’s were simply fabulous- well at least that’s the way the new adaptation of The Great Gatsby makes it seem.

1920’s make-up and fashion never looked so good especially when in 3-D. The 1920’s have become revived in our current fashion and beauty trends of the moment. Since three dimensional make-up has not been invented as of yet our beauty experts Mayela Vazquez and Sean James gave us some tips on how to pull off chic 1920’s hair and make-up styles.

From movie to party by Mayela Vazquez

For a long lasting look, it is very important to prepare and clean your skin before you start applying any make-up product on. Depending on your type of skin, choose a special primer or a moisturizer in case you need it.

After you prepare your skin, start applying your concealer and foundation, if you have a great skin you could use a tinted moisturizer as a foundation too. Make sure you use one that matches your skin shade. Blend gently and apply loose powder or pressed powder evenly over the foundation. Don't use much, and lightly press on and dust off the excess. This prevents you from rubbing off your beautifully applied base. Remember, we are looking for a nice porcelain skin from 1920.

For a 1920’s look you only need to get inspired and you can choose either a more natural look or get creative with a smoky eye. The most important part on either of this looks is to create a thick eye liner on your upper eyelid that will make your eyes look amazing. In terms of lashes, think big. Either go false or curl and apply at least two coats of intense black mascara.

The eyebrows are key to enhance the 1920’s look. To get the look, darken and turn eyebrows slightly downward. You can apply the desired shape with an eye shadow or eyebrow pencil that is darker than your hair color.

To complete your Make-Up application, add a Rouse color on your cheeks and a deep blood red color on your lips. If you want, you can also add some clear gloss to make them pop.

How Maurizio Silvi defines the 1920s makeup look:

M.A.C Cosmetics worked with The Great Gatsby’s makeup designer, Maurizio Silvi, and provided product used in the film—and we have the behind-the-scenes scoop from Silvi himself.

“Since the roaring ‘20s was a time of great economic growth, women began to wear more makeup than years prior. Women celebrated the age of the “flapper girls” as a female declaration of independence. They also began to take more risk in their makeup: Pale skin, smoky eyes, bolder lips, curvy eyebrows, lots of mascara and rosy cheeks. Women were also not afraid to make a statement and they used makeup to express themselves.”

Classic car colours inspired the eyeshadow choices:
A variation of colour combinations was used on the majority of the party looks. Pigments in “Copper,” “Rose Gold” and “Antique Green” were also used on the lids to pop the eyes.

Concealer-coloured lip liner was used to draw a true 1920s lip:
“For the lips, we used different lipstick colours depending on the character: Cremsheen Lipstick in “Hang-Up,” Lipstick in “Film Noir,” “Media,” “Ruby Woo” and “Desire.” Lip pencils included “Cherry,” “Half-Red” and “Currant.” Chromagraphic Pencil in “NC15/NW20” was sometimes used to define the lip line and block out corners of the mouth to create the popular ’20s shape.”

Sean James 1920's Hair Tips Inspired by Great Gatsby

As Sean James explained to us the 1920’s was when women showed their independence by chopping off their hair. The key element is to first of all cut it into what’s called the shingle bob. The roaring 1920’s where fast and swinging, short hair added to the element of immediate style and design. This is when the hairstyle of finger waves became popular. Use a setting lotion or a mousse to help form and set the wave. Brush the hair out after it is dry for a more full look.

The headband
The final step to complete a 1920’s hairdo is to add an art deco headband. The headband should be metallic, possibly with a Chanel style round feather cluster or half turban style headband.

For long hair, set finger waves and pull back into a chignon. Add chopsticks and possibly a decorative brooch on the side of the head.

Cloche hats
A must-have accessory of the 1920′s. The close cropped design’s name is derived from the French word for “bell".
