Styles and Silhouettes

Here's our shortlist of eleven crucial points for choosing the right clothes to enhance your silhouette.

Never forget that an attractive silhouette starts with the choice of the right bra and the right panties to shape the line.

When navigating the world of fashion, wouldn't you like to have a guide to point you in the right direction and help you make the best choices? Well, your wish is our command. Every body shape and silhouette is different, and most of us would probably admit to having a feature we'd like to minimize… or maximize.

Very tall
If you wish to minimize your height while still looking elegant, choose over-layered clothing in contrasting colours. Enlarge the fullness of your shoulders with heavy turtlenecks or large-collared open necklines. Baggy slacks or jeans will also make your silhouette appear shorter.

Very short
In short… ignore all the advice for the very tall woman! Instead, choose simple lines, solid colours, vertical lines or small prints that will create an overall look that is unified and free of sharp contrast to project a taller, slimmer image.

Chubby
Follow the advice for the shorter woman. Avoid fussy details such as ruffles, fancy belts, scarves and accessories. Choose dark and neutral colours that give an impression of slenderness. Opt for soft fabrics that create a more fluid line.

Large hips
To give the illusion of balance between your hips and the upper part of your body, wear loose ample shirts and long jackets, preferably beltless. Avoid clothes that are tight, especially at the waist, and forego extra fullness in coats. Slightly pleated skirts, with little gatherings or tucks at half-hips are elegantly suited for you, especially with sweater sets that hug your hips.

Large bottom
Creating a slim line is your first priority. Avoid straight skirts or dresses, tight pants, light colours… and especially rear pockets. Always choose clothes made from soft fabrics. If your bust is well-proportioned, soft gentle colours near your face and dark colours for the lower part of your body will be most suitable. Look your best with a sense of confidence and the knowledge that what you wear is making you slimmer.

Square shoulders
To create an impression of balance between your square shoulders and your waist, choose raglan blouses or sweaters, as well as open necklines. Skirts with an A-line or large pants without belts are advisable. Avoid wearing shoulder pads or dolman sleeves on ample or too-tight sweaters. Instead, opt for yoked sweaters in classic colours that will harmonize with everything in your wardrobe.

Generous bust
If you're not too short, choose your clothes in colour combinations: dark for the top, light for the lower half. Whether you're wearing shirts or sweaters, they must be ample. Tight clothing will only serve to emphasize your bust.

Heavy waist
Never gather your clothes tightly at the waist. The fullness of sweaters or shirts will gently cover your hips and give flair to your line. As a personal touch, try adding a small narrow belt over a long sweater. An ideal length that will work over everything, pants or skirts, is 3/4 or 7/8.

Heavy legs
Be sure not to make your legs your focal point. Draw attention away from them with dark hose, socks, pants and longer (mid-calf) skirts. Plain elegant shoes with medium heels can provide the style and comfort needed to meet the demands of a long day.

Slim
If you're tall and small-breasted, wear loose, ample clothing. Be generous in your use of accessories and avoid printed fabrics and bright vertical stripes on your blouses or dresses. Skirts with fullness or pleats, trousers gathered at the waist with pockets or detailing will definitely work to your advantage.

Small Bust
To look more feminine, wear colourful mix-and-match basics. Versatility in clothes and accessories will give you that added splash of style. Ties, scarves and blouses with ruffles or tucking are all important elements. Since people usually notice the upper part of your body first, make it an attractive eye catcher.
