Fighting prostate cancer

It’s almost that time of year, when men embrace their facial hair and proudly grow a moustache throughout the month of November… also known as ‘Movember -- a cause that raises funds and awareness for men to help combat prostate, testicular cancer and mental health challenges.

At the Almond Board of California they know a thing or two about nuts, and in the spirit of Movember they share with us some tips on how you can take care of your health.

According to Extenso, the reference center on nutrition of the University of Montreal, 10 to 20% of prostate cancers could be avoided thanks to a balanced diet. Almonds are a great part of a balanced diet as the tree nut highest in protein, fibre, calcium, riboflavin and niacin. In fact, a one-ounce / 28g serving has 6 g of protein and 4 g of fiber.

Did you know that almond contains vitamin E and is part of the food club to revent prostate cancer? So if you haven’t already, how about getting your crunch on?

If you are looking for a way to eat almonds, why not try a handful on your way to the gym to help power you through your workout.

Chocolate Almond Banana Protein Shake

Chris Powell, author, trainer and transformation specialist on ABC’s hit show “Extreme Weight Loss” shares his protein shake recipe, which he recommends before a workout because it has a good mix of protein and carbs for powerful energy.

Almonds are also great as a snack: “I love recommending almonds and almond butter as a snack. A handful or a spoonful keeps you feeling full between meals and less inclined to overdo it at mealtime,” Powell says.

For 1 glass

  • 250 ml / 1 cup vanilla unsweetened almond milk
  • 15 ml / 1 scoop chocolate whey protein powder
  • 15 ml / 1 tbsp almond butter
  • 1/2 banana
  • 250 ml / 1 cup of ice

Preparation

  1. Put all ingredients in a blender.
  2. Blend until smooth. Enjoy!

Have a wonderful day
