All about haircare > How to protect your hair in winter
Winter may be enchanting, unfortunately, the cold season is not the perfect climate for our hair. From hat hair to static electricity, split ends to dry frizz, when winter weather hits, a bad hair day can last an entire season. From chilly winds blowing our hair to indoors its the central heating, hair lose their volume and shine.
Here are some winter time hair care guidelines that will help you to keep your hair healthy.
Protection is indeed significant when you step out in the cold. You must keep your head covered either with a scarf or a cap. But the thing to be kept in mind while wearing the woolen hats or scarves is not to allow them to stroke against your hair. This may pull out the fragile hair causing breakage. In order to avoid any damage, buy caps that have a silk lining or satin cloth underneath.
Avoid excessively hot water when you wash your hair. Hot water can dry out your hair and damage the delicate skin on your scalp, which may be extra sensitive during the winter. Rinse in tepid or even cold water for smooth, shiny hair.
Avoid using heated appliances as much as possible. Using a blow dryer, curling iron or flat iron dries hair out even more in winter.
Remind you also that you should not blow drying your hair just before stepping out of the house - it can damage your hair and make it rough and dull during the season.
If you go outside with damp hair you actually bring your hair to the risk of breakage as they may freeze and become brittle.
Dry heat and cold weather sap hair of moisture. Because dry hair breaks easily, the most important thing you can do during the cold months is to deep condition regularly and use a more intensive daily conditioner.
Your regular comb or hair brush can cause static and hair fall during the colder months. Instead opt for a wide tooth comb, preferably a wooden one to remove tangles from the hair. Never use a comb on wet hair, wait for your hair to dry completely before running a comb through it.
If you are maintaining length, trim your hair about a half inch a month or every other month during the cold season. This will help prevent any breakage from moving up the hair shaft and causing you a boatload of trouble later!
There are some important nutrients that are good for the dull hair of winter. Biotin, for example (in bananas, tomatoes and fish) prevents split ends and hair loss. Vitamin A (in cheese, kale and eggs) strengthens the hair fiber and vitamins B (in whole products and nuts) give shine and suppleness to our hair.
