Jacline interviews Marie-Lyne Marchesseault, esthetician

Is it true that our skin can get used to a product, making it ineffective in the long term?

A product's effectiveness doesn't have anything to do with our skin's getting "used to it," but is connected to changes in our skin over the years. Our skin varies from season to season, as well as with age. Just like our kidneys and lungs, our skin is a living organ that responds to outside aggression. Our needs change over time and so the little jar of cream that was excellent  yesterday may not be the best choice for us today or tomorrow. Our requirements vary over time, thus the importance of adapting our products to our skin's demands.

I just bought a new product. How long is it going to take for me to see results?

Our skin cells have a life cycle of about 28 to 30 days. That's the period required for the outer horny layer to be replaced, making room for new cells. With a good quality product that's adapted to our skin, containing a sufficient quantity of active ingredients and used properly, you should be able to see results in approximately 4 weeks.

My products are all from different companies. Is their effectiveness reduced?

It's always best to buy products from the same line: from cleansing milk to night cream and masks. This rule applies in particular to products with a penetrating ability. The composition of various product lines is not always compatible. They may have  a harmful effect, cancel each other out or create an adverse reaction when combined. Product lines are developed with compatible ingredients to avoid any unpleasant surprises. Furthermore, certain brands have a complementary effect, meaning that all the products in a line create a chain reaction, each contributing an element to the whole. Used separately, the chain is broken and you won't get the full desired effect. If you're making the transition between two lines, avoid using one on top of the other. On the other hand, if you're using a new day cream, you can still use up your old night cream before switching.
